MISSION
KNIVES & TOOLS MPS
Multi Purpose Survival
The Mission MPS is
currently being reviewed by the United States Military as a possible replacement
for the current issue Pilots Survival Knife. The skeletonized tang handle
reduces the knife weight to the absolute minimum possible, while still
retaining a ergonomic grip. Later models will come with the option of
having a Hytrel covered handle.

This survival knife
was designed for use by downed US airmen, but has become popular and is
widely used for many other applications, such as backpacking, camping,
climbing and hiking. For example, there are mountain climbers who use
it because of its durability, light weight and its tough overall capabilities.
There
are people in the Arctic who need it for the same reasons plus the fact
that it won't break in freezing weather, unlike steel. Campers like it
because it makes a fine camp knife.
This new knife was
designed with the input and suggestions of NAVAIR, U.S. Marine Recon units,
units of the Army's Special Operations Command, and
various United States Special Operations personnel. The primary identified
usage is to replace the existing US Government pilot survival knife. The
MPS will easily slip into the existing pilot survival knife's sheath,
although the MPS is shipped with a Kydex sheath. Many backpackers, hikers,
mountian climbers, and campers have also told Mission that the MPS is
the perfect utility knife.
The
blade of the MPS is a smaller version of the MPK with the same "blade
belly" that makes the knife a superior utility model. Notice the
distinctive skeletonized handle that allos this knife to fulfill requirements
where ultimate light weight and thin profile are demanded. Mission will
also be offering a pair of specialized grips that can be attached to the
existing MPS tang.
