Kit Carson’s popular M16® Zytel® family of knives incorporates AutoLAWKS™, CRKT’s exclusive patented automatic knife safety.

When we at Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) considered offering Kit Carson’s very popular aluminum M16® design in a more affordable build, we turned to our very successful InterFrame construction.

We’ve incorporated our exclusive patented* AutoLAWKS™ automatic knife safety into all models, which converts the M16 Zytel series into virtual fixed blades when their blades are open and locked.

Instead of aluminum handles, we use tough, textured Zytel® scales over a 420J2 stainless steel liner InterFrame. We overbuild it for rigidity, using Zytel back spacers. And we assemble the handle with superior offset Torx® fasteners.

The handle is slightly heftier and wider than our aluminum build M16, but it is exceptionally rigid. To some of us, it actually fills the hand better.

We use our tough AUS 4 high-carbon stainless steel for the blades to give greater everyday utility, and offer both Razor-Sharp and Combined Razor-Sharp and Triple-Point™ Serrated edges. All models feature the Carson Flipper, which is not only an aid to opening the blade, especially when wearing gloves, but acts as a blade guard when the blade is open.

The M16®-02Z and 12Z are tough little bulldogs, with dual grind Tanto-style blades.

The M16®-03Z and 13Z are slimmer designs with spear point blades. They are ideal for a variety of carry positions.

The hefty M16®-04Z and 14Z Big Dogs offer larger dual grind Tanto-style blades. These are full-size working knives suited to large hands and heavy-duty tasks.

All styles have Teflon® bearings and a removable Teflon®-plated stainless steel clothing/gear clip.

Which M16 design is right for you? It depends on the task. Think of our original aluminum-handled M16 as an Arabian stallion—purpose bred and lightweight. Think of the M16-Zytel as a Clydesdale—ready to rush a knight into battle or pull a beer wagon. Every day. Day after day.

Well made but poorly designed 12/16/2013
By TDG
I've had one of these for several years now, and it's a bit of a love hate relationship. I love its looks, its materials, its feel, its blade and build quality - all great. I hate the fact that the lock release requires your thumb to be in front of the blade as opposed to on the back (where everyone else puts it) - so woe betide anyone who tries to unlock and close quickly with one hand. I also hate the lanyard hole on the back of the blade. This has grippy serrations on the back, which means when the blade is closed and you put it in your pocket, this has a tendency to try to open the blade! This is exacerbated by the fact that there's no spring on the blade to provide resistance to opening it. Hence it's not safe to just keep this in a pocket and reach in for it. All in all, it's like it was designed by someone who doesn't actually ever use a knife. Such a shame - two tiny design changes and it would be 5 stars. I give it 2 stars because both the problems are safety issues.
